Regular Assessment: Safety legislation requires new critical medical assessments every three years to ensure employees remain fit for their jobs. But some medical conditions, age, or specific safety critical work may need more health surveillance checks.

The frequency of Safety Critical Medicals depends primarily on the worker’s age, with standard industry guidance as follows:

• Aged 54 and under: Every 3 years
• Aged 55–64: Every 2 years
• Aged 65 and over: Annually (every year)

Special Circumstances & Employer Responsibilities

• Some workplaces or specific roles may require more frequent assessments, especially if risk assessments indicate higher risks or if an individual’s health status changes.
• For certain positions (such as crane operators), an annual medical questionnaire reviewed by an occupational health professional may be required in the years between full medicals.
• If a worker experiences a significant change in health or returns after a long absence, an additional assessment may be needed outside the normal schedule.
• Employers are responsible for ensuring these medicals are up to date and provided at no cost to employees.
