Can You Fail a PADI Diving Medical? What Actually Happens If There’s a Problem
If you’re preparing to start a scuba diving course, it’s completely normal to feel slightly anxious about the medical questionnaire. One of the most common concerns people have is: “Can I fail a PADI diving medical?”
The honest answer is: it’s possible — but it’s far less dramatic than it sounds. In most situations, people are not “failed.” Instead, they may be temporarily deferred while further checks are carried out.
Understanding the difference makes all the difference.
“Fail” vs. “Temporarily Deferred”
When completing a medical questionnaire for training through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), the purpose is safety — not to catch you out.
If you tick “yes” to certain medical conditions, this doesn’t automatically mean you’re not allowed to dive. It usually means a doctor needs to review your health history in more detail.
A temporary deferral simply means clearance is paused until further information or testing is completed. Once everything is reviewed and considered safe, many applicants are approved.
A true “fail” generally only occurs when there is a serious, uncontrolled medical condition that presents a significant safety risk underwater.
Most Common Reasons for Delay
Certain medical conditions are more likely to trigger further review.
These are not automatic disqualifications. They simply require careful consideration because scuba diving exposes the body to pressure changes, altered breathing patterns, and physical exertion.
- Asthma or other respiratory conditions
- History of collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
- Heart conditions or chest pain
- High blood pressure
- Irregular heartbeat
- Seizures or unexplained fainting
- Recent major surgery
- Certain medications
How Asthma and Respiratory Issues Are Handled
Asthma is one of the most frequently discussed conditions in diving medicine.
Having asthma does not automatically prevent you from diving. Doctors assess:
How well your asthma is controlled
Whether it is triggered by exercise or cold air
How frequently you use medication
Your lung function test results
If asthma is mild and stable, many individuals are cleared. However, if symptoms are unpredictable or poorly controlled, further testing such as spirometry may be required.
The key concern is whether your lungs can safely handle pressure changes during descent and ascent. This is why respiratory conditions are assessed carefully — but fairly.
When Further Tests Are Needed
In some cases, your doctor may request additional testing before signing you off. For example:
An ECG or exercise stress test for heart conditions
Spirometry for asthma
Blood pressure monitoring
Neurological evaluation if there is a history of fainting
These tests are precautionary. Diving takes place in an environment where emergency care is not immediately available, so medical standards prioritise prevention.
In most cases, once results confirm stability, clearance is granted.
Why Honesty on the Questionnaire Matters
It can be tempting to leave out information if you’re worried about delays. However, honesty is essential.
Undisclosed medical conditions can increase your risk underwater. Transparency allows doctors to make informed decisions and protect your safety.
The medical screening process exists to build trust — between you, your instructor, and your healthcare provider.
