Who needs an Airside Medical?
To get an airside driving permit, you must pass an airside driving medical to ensure you’re fit for the job. This is required for anyone driving within the airside perimeter, including runways, access areas, and outer roads.
Airside Medicals make sure you meet basic health standards set by occupational health providers and the Department for Transport (DfT), based on the risks of driving in airport environments.
A medical is needed for anyone wanting a permit to drive any airside vehicle, whether it’s class 1 (under 3.5 tonnes) or class 2 (over 3.5 tonnes).
When to renew my Airside Medical?
- Every 3 years
Depending on your employer, you might need extra health checks, but generally, you’ll need to renew your airside driving medical every 3 years.
Renewal requirements can vary based on the age limits for the vehicle you’re driving, your current health, and if you’ve had any driving accidents or incidents at work.

Who can do my Airside Medical?
Your airside driving medical will be conducted by a GMC-registered doctor experienced in aviation medical examinations. At MotorMedicals, we ensure that our airside medicals meet the highest standards of care and compliance. Our doctors are well-versed in the specific health requirements for airside operations, ensuring you are fit and safe to perform your duties.
Our airside medicals comply with Airport Operators Association (AOA) standards, which are similar to DVLA Group 2 standards. This means our examinations are thorough and tailored to the unique demands of driving in the airside environment. We assess your overall health, vision, hearing, and physical capabilities to ensure you meet the necessary criteria for airside driving.
