Medical records are required for a firearm medical report to ensure the applicant is mentally and physically fit to safely handle a firearm. This review helps identify any health issues or medications that could impair their ability to use a firearm, ensuring public safety and compliance with legal requirements.

The final approval for whether an applicant can have a firearm is typically made by the police or a firearms licensing officer. The role of the doctor is to assess the applicant’s mental and physical fitness through a medical examination and provide a report. The police or licensing authority then uses this medical report, along with other background checks, to make the final decision on whether to grant the firearms licence.

At Motor Medicals, we offer comprehensive firearms medical examinations for just £60. This fee covers the assessment and the preparation of the necessary medical report.

If the doctor determines that you are unfit to possess a firearm, the police or licensing authority will be notified, and your application for a firearm license may be denied. You may be advised on any steps you can take or medical conditions to address before reapplying.

If your firearm license application is denied based on the medical report, you may have the option to appeal the decision with the licensing authority. It is advisable to seek legal advice or further medical evaluation if you believe the decision was made in error.

We keep your records for 6 Months before they are erased.

A firearms medical examination is an assessment conducted by a licensed doctor to evaluate an applicant’s mental and physical fitness to safely own and operate a firearm. This examination is required to ensure the applicant does not have any medical conditions that could impair their ability to handle a firearm responsibly.

Please note – It can take up to 30 days for your GP practice to release medicals records to our Doctors. We then complete the medical within 48 hours of receiving these and only hold these records for 6 months.

How often do I need a Firearm medical?

Firearm medicals must be completed before you get your first firearm license as well as every 5 years for renewal. You must get your medical before 5 months of your current license expiry.

In the UK, every applicant to police forces must undergo a firearms medical assessment. The objective of these assessments is to confrim that individuals are medically fit to handle firearms.

Processing Time for a Fire Arms Application

The processing time for a firearm medical application and approval by the police can vary, but it typically takes 4 weeks (most of the time is waiting on your records from your practise). If there are any medical concerns, the police may request additional information, which can further extend the processing time.

It is important for applicants to ensure that their medical information is accurate and complete to avoid delays. In some cases, applicants may be asked to provide additional medical reports, which could be at their own expense or covered by the police if further clarification is required.

Conditions That May Affect a Firearms Medical

Certain medical conditions can significantly impact your ability to obtain or renew a firearms certificate. These conditions are scrutinized during the firearms medical assessment to ensure that individuals are physically and mentally capable of handling firearms safely. The primary concern is public safety, as any impairment could increase the risk of accidental or intentional harm.

Coronary Heart Disease

Increases risk of sudden cardiac events, which could be dangerous when handling firearms.

Epilepsy

Seizures can lead to loss of control and pose serious safety risks when handling firearms.

Diabetes (especially if insulin-dependent)

Risk of hypoglycemia, which can cause sudden loss of consciousness or impaired judgment.

Severe Mental Health Conditions

Conditions such as severe depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder can impair judgment and increase the risk of harm to oneself or others.

Substance Abuse (Drugs or Alcohol)

Impairs cognitive and motor functions, increases impulsiveness, and poses significant risks when combined with firearm handling.

Neurological Disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease)

Can cause tremors, muscle stiffness, and impaired motor control, affecting the safe handling of firearms.

Severe Respiratory Conditions

Conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can cause severe fatigue and reduced alertness.

Visual Impairments

Good vision is crucial for the accurate and safe use of firearms. Significant visual impairment can compromise safety.

Severe Hearing Loss
