Most workplace accidents can be stopped with good health checks, especially in high-risk environments where a safety-critical decision, balance, or coordination issue could put people in danger.

At MotorMedicals, we provide safety critical worker medicals to support health and fitness across your workforce, helping your organisation ensure the safety of workers and the safety or that of others, with legal requirements are met in line with HSE expectations.

Onsite medicals keep things simple on busy sites. Our occupational health team visits your workplace, allowing a safety critical worker to complete a fit to work health check without incurring long travel or lost time.

This helps you keep your business running and provides a clear outcome that supports fit-for-work decisions, with a fitness certificate provided if your organisation requires one upon completion of the medical assessment.

If a clinic visit suits your team better, you can pick from our 40+ clinics across England. We’re in Manchester (Radcliffe), Telford, Birmingham (Hall Green), and Wolverhampton, so it’s straightforward to book a Safety Critical Medical near you when you’ve got people working in roles across multiple sites.

What is a Safety Critical Medical?

A safety critical medical is a health check for workers undertaking safety-critical tasks, or any undertakes a task defined as safety critical by site rules, client policy, or national standards.

The point is to spot risks that could lead to incidents, such as sudden loss of consciousness or incapacity, impairment of awareness, or a musculoskeletal issue that causes a significant limitation of mobility.

In roles where ill health could lead to impairment, an individual may compromise their ability to undertake the work safely, so the assessment focuses on the ability to undertake a task defined for that job.

These are thorough assessments and in-depth medicals designed to build a comprehensive health picture, especially if someone is suffering from medical conditions or undergoing any medical treatment, or if they have medical conditions or are undergoing changes in medical treatment that could affect safe performance.

We can provide drug and alcohol testing alongside this if your site policy calls for it.

Who needs a Safety critical Medical?

Some jobs need safety critical medical checks to keep workers and others safe. These medicals are important for workers doing safety critical tasks like using heavy machinery, working at heights, or going into confined spaces where health problems could stop them from working safely and could cause accidents or injuries.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 says employers must protect their employees’ health, safety, and welfare. This means doing risk checks to find safety critical jobs and arranging medical checks when needed. These checks help find any health problems or treatments that might affect how safely someone can work in safety critical jobs.

These include:

What should I bring to my medical?

Any Glasses/
Contacts worn

Any relevant
hospital letters

License or Passport

Any
medication Taken

NHS app not required but helpful to have an overview of medical history

How Often Do I Need a Safety Critical Medical?

First check: New safety critical workers should have a fitness-for-task health check before they start a task defined as safety critical.

Ongoing checks: After that, how often you need a review depends on risk. It will depend on the job, the site rules, and any client or sector requirements.

Many employers use trusted sector guidance and their own risk assessment. They do this to help ensure the safety of the workforce and the safety of others, and to make sure legal requirements are met as part of their duty of care.

In construction and other high-risk work, some providers use age bands as a helpful guide.

These are not one fixed legal rule for every job. A common approach is a full medical about every three years for most workers, then more often as people get older.

Reviews may also be more frequent when the health of an individual may change, when someone is suffering from medical conditions, or when they are undergoing any medical treatment that could affect safe working.

Some employers may use a short yearly health questionnaire between full medicals for certain safety-critical roles.

It’s a quick check for changes since the last assessment. If someone is undergoing any medical treatment, suffering from medical conditions, or reports symptoms that could affect awareness, balance or coordination, or mobility, they may need an earlier review.

An extra assessment may also be needed after a long absence or a significant change in health.

Employers have a duty to arrange and pay for the right checks. This supports their duty of care to prevent avoidable incidents.

If your site or client needs it, we can provide a certificate or fitness certificate once the medical is completed to support fit for work decisions.
